The Marblehead Conservancy and Mookies are pleased to celebrate the beauty of Marblehead’s natural open spaces in collaboration with several extremely talented local artists. Each artist has painted a scene from one of these open spaces for your enjoyment.
We thank the artists and Mookies for allowing us to share that beauty with you. Nearly all paintings are for sale and all proceeds go directly to the artist. I’m a member of the Monotype Guild of New England, a plein air painting group, Boston Artists North, and I’m a member of the Marblehead, Newburyport, Concord and Provincetown Art Associations. I facilitate printmaking classes in Marblehead at Little Harbor Studios, and I am a member of Four Sparrows, a printmaking collaboration on the North Shore. My work can be seen on my website: www.amyhourihan.com

Peter Ziegler
I have bachelor’s and master’s degrees in architecture, and for many years I was a full-time architect and part-time painter. For the last ten years I have been more of a full-time painter.
I have painted extensively on Marblehead Conservancy lands, particularly Forest River and Ware Pond, both of which are near where I live.
In January 2026 I will have a solo show at the Marblehead Arts Association featuring my paintings of Italy.

When I was working (as a pediatrician) I never had much extra time. I liked doing things with my hands so I made furniture with power tools. My brother, a world traveler, inspired me to take up photography which I could do whenever I had time.
About 10 years ago I had been “laid up” for a number of months and I digitized over 3000 photos. But there seemed to be something lacking, more personal. I thought about drawing. My mother before she was married was an illustrator – she had gone to the Art Institute in Chicago. But, when kids came she totally stopped. When I was 6, I have a memory of her taking out some watercolors and painting a barn.
In the few years since I’ve been retired, I started to draw, learning from books, and then moved to pen and ink and then added some watercolors. I filled small sketchbooks with these illustrations, most of which are scenes from Marblehead. Over the years I gradually moved on to small watercolors and finally to full sized. I’ve been essentially self-taught with good suggestions from others.

In 2019, she received two “Best of Show” awards for her oil paintings from the Marblehead Festival of Arts. While she teaches psychology at Salem State University, she has also taught the Psychology of Art and Creativity at Montserrat School of Art in Beverly, Massachusetts. Always moved by color and visual beauty in nature, watercolor painting has further nourished my heart to my surroundings. Since moving to Marblehead, I have enjoyed painting the amazing opportunities of local scenery in this beautiful town. Marblehead really calls to all my senses for sure.
My favorite time of year is the spring with the blooming flowers and harbor landscapes, and my watercolors are full of pink tones in the local gardens. People have described my art as being “happy” and “pink” themed.
I also create art inspired by my travels to beautiful venues throughout England of cottage gardens and flowering window boxes, cherry blossoms in Kyoto, Japan and to colorful reef fish and tropical scenery of bougainvillea and palm trees.
In 2016 I was elected to be on the Board of Directors of the Swampscott Arts Association, and I have been a member of the Marblehead Arts Association since 2006 being an Artist Member since 2022.
In addition to the great opportunities and personal satisfaction painting gives me, it connected me to a great network of artistic friends. In 2017 I joined a new art studio in Marblehead called Little Harbor Studios and Gallery.
Each year I create a calendar of my paintings. I sell these calendars as well as greeting cards, matted prints and bookmarks of my art.
